Domain Name

Congratulations! you have made it to the first step of creating a website.

What is Domain Name?

Before you even think about building your website, you should register a domain name. A domain name is your address on the web. It’s thedomain-names information that customers type in to find your website. It looks like www.yourdomain.com. A domain name can be a combination of letters and numbers. The official domain name extensions are .com, .biz, .gov, .org, .net, .info, .us, .ws and more.

Domain names are registered on an annual basis and you can register it many years in advance.

Prices can range from between $2.5 to $15 up to as much as $30 and even $40. If you purchase hosting at the same time, the domain name is even cheaper.

If you don’t have a domain name yet, get your domain name now.

How to choose a good domain name?

  1. Do not register the domain name that is too long. You can register names up to 63 characters long, but that doesn’t mean you have to use all 63 characters. Your name should be easy to remember, so try to think of something that can be easily remembered.
  2. It’s best to be keep your domain name less than 15 characters, if possible. A shorter name is easier for people to remember and it also reduce the likelihood that your visitor will mistype it or spell it wrong.
  3. You can have the best site in the world, but if people can’t remember your domain name it will cut down on your return visitors. So the most memorable name, the easier it is for people to remember.
  4. You can use hyphens if your name is more than 3 words long. A name like mobilebuying.com doesn’t really need hyphen, because it’s readable than used-mobile-buying.com. Ofcourse it’s not bad, but people may feel tired of typing those long names. It’s also good to keep your domain name shot and sweet. However name like used-mobile-buying.com looks better than usedmobilebuying.com.
  5. Don’t just choose a random name. For example, your site is about used mobile phones, you should name it as used-mobile-buying.com or usedcellphones.com or usedmobiles.com. In any of the way it should be related to your site.

How to register a domain name?

In the early days of the Web, individuals and businesses registered their domain names with the registry service Network Solutions, then transferred the hosting rights to a hosting provider. Fortunately, there’s no need to deal with two separate parties when registering and hosting your domain name because Network Solutions is no longer the only accredited registrar.

If you go to almost any Web hosting company – such as GoDaddy, SiteGround or Yahoo! Web Hosting – you’ll notice an embedded search box somewhere on the main page that will let you see if the domain name you want is available. If it is, the hosting company can register it for you directly. The hosting company will notify you when the domain name is active, and warn you when it is time to renew.

In addition to the well-known hosting companies, hundreds of others can act as registrants and hosts for your domain name. You can use one of these companies to register a domain name and host the domain on your own server(s). However, few small businesses can afford the costs of hosting their own Web presence, which is almost always handled by a hosting specialist on your behalf.

Note that although hundreds of companies are legally qualified to register a domain name on your behalf, not all are equally reliable. Be certain to research your registration/hosting company of choice before committing to it.

You register your domain name through a domain name registrar like GoDaddy, SiteGround or Yahoo! Web Hosting.

To register your domain name, enter your preferred domain into the search form. If it’s available, simply proceed to the checkout. The site  will walk you through the registration step by step.

Step by Step

Here’s more detail on registering your domain name.

Check Availability (opens in new window)

This is where you check that your preferred domain name hasn’t already been registered by somebody else. A domain name can only be registered to one person at any one time, so if someone else has already registered it, you won’t be able to (or you can put it on back order). Of course, the good thing about this is that, once you register your own domain name, nobody else can get it – it’s yours for as long as you want it to be!

To check availability, go to site, enter your preferred domain into the search form, and click “GO!”.

If the domain is not available, try again using an alternative name.

If the domain is available, continue to checkout.

This part is just like purchasing any other product online. You simply follow the prompts through to the checkout. You may be offered related products, such as similar domain names or different top level domains. To add these to your order, click “YES! Add these to my order.”. Otherwise click “Continue to checkout”.
